As an expectant mom, I knew nourishing and caring for a newborn would be challenging. But besides that, there were many more unexpected challenges I had to face in my postpartum journey. One such challenge was finding postpartum outfits for breastfeeding moms.

I wanted clothes that made me feel comfortable, confident, and functional. My body was healing, my baby needed constant feeding, and I still wanted to look presentable. And then there are the memories of breastfeeding in public for the first time! Ah, the distress of not knowing what to do combined with clothes not designed for feeding. I could go on and on but then we’d be here all day.

Thankfully, these experiences taught me the importance of a postpartum wardrobe for breastfeeding moms. And that’s why I’m here today to help all fellow moms find stylish clothes for breastfeeding.

What to Look for in Postpartum Outfits for Breastfeeding Moms?

I learned through trial and error what really mattered in postpartum clothing. Here are the essentials I wish someone had told me about:

  • Easy Access for Nursing: Trust me, there’s nothing more frustrating than fumbling with layers while trying to nurse a hungry/crying baby. Look for clothes with zippers, buttons, or nursing flaps to make breastfeeding more manageable.
  • Soft, Breathable Fabrics: During postpartum, the skin usually feels sensitive. Plus, those random hot flashes are just aargh! Prioritize fabrics like cotton, bamboo, or modal that feel gentle on sensitive skin and keep you cool.
  • Stretch and Flexibility: Your body is on a journey and deserves clothes that adapt to those changes. Stretchy materials became my go-to, allowing me to feel comfortable no matter what stage I was in.
  • Comfortable Fit: Those early days are all about survival, so the last thing you need is clothes digging into your waist or shoulders. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive. Your clothes should provide comfort, not add stress.
  • Durability and Washability: Let’s face it—Life with a newborn can get messy. Choose outfits that can handle frequent washing without losing their shape or quality.
  • Stain-Friendly Colors and Prints: Spit-ups, leaks, or spills happen more often than we care for. So, it’s best to go for darker shades and fun prints because they do a great job of hiding the mess when you don’t have time for a quick change.

10 Best Postpartum Outfits for Breastfeeding Moms

In postpartum life, you have to keep things simple to survive those hectic days. These breastfeeding-friendly outfits are super practical and comfortable. They made me feel like myself again, even in the middle of all the chaos.

Basic tank tops

I basically lived in nursing tank tops during the early days.

They’re so simple yet incredibly functional. Most come with built-in nursing clips, making them perfect for quick feeds, even when you’re half-asleep.

You can dress it up or down for the kind of look you want. Going out for a quick errand? Just put on loose cardigans or oversized shirts over a tank top for a casual but put-together look. Pro tip: invest in neutral shades like black, white, or nude as they go with everything and make outfit planning effortless.

Stretchy, loose-fitting blouse

As a new mom, if you want to feel stylish without compromising on comfort, a loose-fitting blouse is a postpartum essential. For me, the loose fit was truly a blessing on days when I still felt a bit self-conscious about my postpartum belly.

Wrap-style blouses or those with hidden zippers are perfect for nursing discreetly, whether you’re at home or out with friends. Pair them with stretchy jeans or leggings, and you’ve got a chic and functional outfit.

Jumpsuit

Moms are often hesitant to try jumpsuits, thinking they might be impractical. I thought so too, but they turned out to be a game-changer. They’re one-piece wonders that save you the hassle of mixing and matching.

Look for ones with front buttons or wrap designs that make nursing a breeze. Pair it up with comfy pumps or sneakers for a day out. You can even throw on a statement necklace or a chunky bracelet to amp up the look for a casual dinner.

Flowy frocks/dresses

A flowy dress is a must-have for a breastfeeding mom, especially for warmer days or special occasions.

I’ve found that dresses with empire waists or elastic underbusts are more flattering and provide easy nursing access. Maxi dresses, in particular, can make you feel effortlessly elegant while offering plenty of coverage. Best part? Such dresses are really versatile. You can add a hat and sandals for a summery vibe or layer with a cardigan for cooler days.

Button-down shirt

The classic button-down is a postpartum staple. It can be counted as one of the best nursing outfits and can be styled in multiple ways.

Wear a button-down shirt over a nursing tank top for quick access and pair it with stretchy trousers or leggings. Bonus: they’re perfect for layering in colder months or tying around your waist for a stylish touch.

Soft cozy pajama set

Nursing pajamas with button fronts or nursing panels are perfect for nighttime feedings. In fact, they were my outfit of choice for many postpartum days.

However, finding the right pajama set for breastfeeding can be tricky. Look for sets made from ultra-soft fabrics that keep you cozy and comfortable during those long nights and early mornings. Plus, cute matching sets can make you feel a bit more put-together, even during those sleep-deprived days.

Nursing bras

Do you avoid buying nursing bras thinking they are too expensive? Well, trust me, they are worth every penny.

Stock up on a few seamless, wire-free options that offer support without digging into the skin. Also, don’t forget to grab some nursing bras with removable pads. They are great for catching leaks. Breastfeeding during postpartum can be challenging, and a good nursing bra makes the whole process so much easier.

High-waisted leggings

High-waisted leggings are one of the top essentials for postpartum moms. Be it lounging, running errands, hanging out with friends, or even light exercise, high-waist leggings can be your go-to for almost everything.

They offer gentle compression for your belly making you feel supported and secure. Pair them with oversized sweaters or nursing tanks for a stylish yet practical look.

Stretchy Jeans & Pants

I’m sure like me, many new moms are initially scared to wear jeans postpartum, but stretchy jeans with elastic waistbands completely changed my mind. They offered the polished look of denim with the comfort of leggings.

Look for jeans with elastic waistbands or postpartum-specific designs that accommodate your body’s changes. Style them with a casual top or blazer for a neat look.

I found that darker washes were especially flattering and paired well with any top in my closet.

A blazer or jacket

Take any outfit to the next level with a structured blazer or lightweight jacket. It’s a great layering piece for breastfeeding moms who want to feel and look composed and confident during outings.

You can simply put one over a nursing tank or a simple tee for an easy but trendy mom-on-the-go look. It’s the perfect piece to refine even the most basic outfit. Plus, it offers a bit of coverage when nursing in public, which I found super convenient.
