Spring is the perfect time to snap up some memorable family photographs that you and the kids will cherish for life. But if the outfits you all are wearing look badly put together and unflattering, there’s a slim chance you’ll truly enjoy these memos.

So, if you’re planning a spring family photo session, put some thought into deciding how everyone will dress. To make things easier for you, I am sharing the best spring family photo outfits to spark your inspiration.

What Colors to Wear for Family Photos in Spring

Before collecting items from everyone’s wardrobes to build a certain style board for the spring photo, see if you have one item that you’d absolutely love showing off.

This could be a floral dress that you look flattering in, a vest that makes your little boy look like a prince, or a pair of comfy chinos you’d want to see your man in. Once that item is decided, you can build the rest of the spring family photo outfits around it.

I prefer coordinating spring family photo outfits instead of everyone being matchy-matchy. Coordinating the dresses gives you more styling freedom and helps all members stand out.

If you’re not sure what color looks best in Spring, here are some spring color pallets that look mesmerizing with the season:

  • Soft pastel hues
  • Earthy tones and colors
  • Pretty floral and feminine tones and colors
  • White and blue colors
  • Ginghams

Spring Family Photo Outfits: Soft Pastel Hues

Close-Up image of clothing items arranged against a plain background, suggesting outfit ideas for a spring family photo with a soft pastel theme. On the top left, there is a light peach sleeveless dress with layered ruffles. Adjacent to the right is a short-sleeved, sky blue polo shirt. Below are two more items: on the left, an aqua green t-shirt paired with denim shorts that have a floral print on one side, and on the right, khaki-colored pants. At the center bottom of the image is text that reads Spring Family Photo Outfits.

Pastels are a quintessential choice for spring as they evoke a light, airy feel that complements the blossoming surroundings. Think blush pink, pale Lavender, soft yellows, baby blues, and mint greens. These colors work well because they don’t overpower the natural backdrop and bring freshness.

Spring Family Photo Color Schemes: Earthy Colors

It includes a long-sleeve green dress with a cut-out detail at the waist, a plain white t-shirt, a yellow short-sleeve t-shirt, beige pants, and a pink children’s dress with lace detailing. If your inspiration is a more grounded and warm aesthetic, earthy tones like olive green, mustard yellow, and rusty red can create a soothing palette. These colors reflect the natural elements of spring, such as blooming flowers and rich soil. But it’s better to mix them with other fresh colors as too many earthy tones could make your photos look like they are clicked in the fall.

Spring Family Photo Outfits: Florals and Feminine Colors

Close-up image of a collage of four photos displaying garments with floral patterns. It includes a child’s dress in orange and yellow tones, an adult’s pastel-colored shirt, a close-up of a light blue shirt with dark blue flowers, and an adult in a knee-length dress featuring small blue and pink flowers.

The mom and girls deserve to have their moment in pretty florals whenever an opportunity arises, and what could be better to do that than a family photo? Interestingly, floral spring family photo color schemes don’t have to be clothes only.

You can incorporate them through accessories, like scarves or hats, or through floral print dresses and shirts.

Combining florals with feminine colors like lavender, blue, or coral brings a lively and dynamic look. It’s a fun way to play up the spring theme without it feeling forced.

Spring Family Photo Outfits in White and Blue

In the center, an individual is dressed in a formal white gown with blue details and a tiara, standing in front of a light background. On the right, a child wearing a white and blue dress with a necklace is shown against a blurred background. The child’s attire includes denim overalls worn over the dress. The white and blue combo offers a fresh and elegant backdrop that allows your family to be the focal point of the photos. My favorites are navy blue family photo outfits that help you create a timeless album that won’t seem dated as trends change.

A Touch of Gingham for Family Photos

Image of a family. The first photo on the left shows a person in a blue buttoned shirt holding a phone to their ear. The middle photo features an individual in a white dress with floral patterns, standing in a field with tall grass and trees in the background. The third photo on the right displays a person joyfully raising their arms, wearing a white dress with pink polka dots against an outdoor backdrop.

If you want to bring a touch of pattern into your spring family photo outfits, gingham will do the job. I prefer larger checks because small-scale check patterns can overwhelm the image. Go for simple ginghams in neutrals like white, beige, and light blue.

Spring Family Photo Outfit Ideas Indoor

A person stands against a neutral-toned backdrop, dressed in a stylish yellow blouse tucked into high-waisted beige trousers, accessorized with a belt and open-toe heels, while another individual poses in casual attire with a green cardigan over a white shirt, khaki pants, and brown shoes; a child is depicted in an orange polo shirt, beige shorts with suspenders, white socks, and brown sandals, and another child stands in an old-fashioned floral dress with puffed sleeves, lace collar, white socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. Mom’s Outfit – Mustard Wrap & Beige Trousers: The mustard yellow wrap blouse in lightweight fabric provides a soft, flowing look that captures the gentle breezes of the season. This top flatters the figure with its wrap design and accentuates the waist, while its vibrant color adds a cheerful pop. Pairing the blouse with beige wide-legged trousers balances the vibrancy of the mustard yellow. To add more oomph to the outfit, an olive green statement necklace will complement the blouse, while beige strappy sandals are a cool footwear of choice.

Dad’s Outfit – Olive Ease & Khaki Style: The olive green button-down shirt goes well with the natural hues of the season and puts the whole look together. The khaki chinos rolled up slightly at the hem make a relaxed yet polished vibe. Plus, a leather watch with a beige strap beautifies the outfit without overwhelming it. Lastly, the d can opt for beige loafers or suede shoes, based on his style.

Little Boy’s Outfit – Rustic Play: Dressing your boy in a rust orange polo shirt gives a vibrant pop of color that stands out beautifully against the softer hues of a spring backdrop. Pairing this with beige cargo shorts also offers a neutral balance to the bright shirt. An olive green baseball cap adds a fun twist to his look while being incredibly functional. Complementing this outfit are beige sneakers that are stylish and practical for any spring adventure during the shoot.

Little Girl’s Outfit – Soft Yellow Floral Dress With Mary Janes: Let your girl be in her element with the floral A-line dress in a soft yellow with subtle floral prints in rust orange and olive green. If you feel like accessorizing this look, a simple beige hair band complements the dress without overpowering it. Keep her hair neatly in place to add sweetness to her appearance. Beige Mary Jane flats will give off classic comfort and style, making it easy for her to frolic around the photo sets.

Mom’s Outfit – Pastel Pink Dress: A pastel pink dress, with its midi length and flowy design, offers a flattering fit and gels well in the whole family’s color pallet. Its soft floral patterns will feel understated yet add visual interest so the mom looks timeless and fashionable. You can accessorize this look with delicate gold jewelry for shimmer and beautify the outfit without overpowering it. Plus, a soft yellow scarf can be draped elegantly around your neck or shoulders and will add a pop of complementary color that ties the outfit together.

Dad’s Outfit – Blue and Khaki Elegance: A soft blue button-down shirt with khakis is a classic combo that never feels out of place. The khaki chinos offer a subtle nod to the mom’s floral dress theme without being overt to maintain a masculine appearance. Adding a dash of vibrancy, a soft yellow pocket square provides a splash of color that contrasts with the sky-blue shirt.

Little Boy’s Outfit – Green & Navy Outfit: A sage green polo shirt offers a clean look as this color is soothing to the eye and is versatile enough to blend with natural spring settings. Complementing the top, navy shorts will serve as a solid base to balance the brighter shades. They offer a contrast that increases the lighter green and makes the outfit photo-ready. To complete the look, a sky blue cap, and white sneakers are evergreen choices that never make the family photo oddly put.

Little Girl’s Outfit – Springtime Blossom: The focal point for this is an A-line dress in soft yellow sprinkled with small floral prints in rose pink and sky blue. Complementing the dress, a sky-blue headband will keep her hair neatly in place while echoing the dress’s floral accents. If the day turns cool, a sage green light cardigan will be ready to keep her warm without overshadowing the outfit’s cheerful colors.

Colors to Avoid in Spring Family Photos

Muted, pastel, and soft shades of any color look good in spring family photos because that’s what the season feels like.

But if you don’t want these pictures to look out of place, here are some colors to stay away from:

  • Neons: Bright neon colors like fluorescent yellow, green, or pink tend to dominate the photo, pulling focus away from the family’s expressions and the natural environment.
  • Turquoise: Turquoise is often too vibrant and can compete with the gentle hues of spring flowers. It’s better suited for summer or beach settings.
  • Black on Black: Full black outfits can appear too harsh against the light and airy backdrop of spring. Also, black absorbs more light, which can lead to a loss of detail in the photographs.
  • Metallics: Shiny metallics might be tempting for a little sparkle, but they can reflect sunlight in a way that is too harsh for the soft lighting of spring. It would eventually cause unwanted glare and imbalance in photos.

FAQs

Does Gingham photograph well in spring?

Yes, Gingham photographs well in spring as its clean, simple pattern offers a timeless look that complements the natural backdrop of a spring setting. But it’s better to pick one major outfit item (say, the mom’s dress) in gingham and coordinate the rest to not make it overwhelming.

Do floral prints photograph well in spring pictures?

Of course, spring is the season of pretty flowers, and wearing florals makes sense for your family pictures. But when I say florals, I mean in muted, soft, and neutral colors; nothing too in the face.

What color lipstick to wear for family photos?

It’s completely fine to go with the lipstick color you normally wear. I am not a fan of nudes for family photos though because they make my lips disappear into my skin tone. I prefer soft pinkish colors for a little bold look. But if you don’t wear pink or berry lipstick, go with what represents your true self.
