“How do you always manage to look so put-together? It feels like you never have a dull styling moment.”

“How can I improve my fashion level and take up a style that looks good wherever I go? I feel like whatever I wear doesn’t suit me as much as I expect.”

“So many things remain in my closet for years because I don’t know if they’ll look good on me.”

These are the kinds of questions I get all the time, especially from my fellow moms. And trust me, I’ve been there too!

Between work, family, and everything in between, it’s easy to lose touch with what makes us feel stylish and confident.

I wasn’t always the person who felt confident about what I wore. There was a time when I would stand in front of the mirror for hours, trying on outfit after outfit, only to feel like nothing looked quite right.

But over time, I learned that creating a fashion statement isn’t about wearing expensive clothes or copying the latest trends. It’s more about discovering what truly works for you.

And here’s the thing: style isn’t something that fades with age. In fact, your 30s and 40s can be the perfect time to redefine your fashion statement. You can absolutely transform the way you dress and feel about yourself with just a few simple changes.

So, if you’ve ever felt stuck in a style rut or unsure of how to improve your fashion style, you’re in the right place. I’m going to share my fashion secrets to help you rediscover your style, elevate your everyday outfits, and feel fabulous.

How to Improve Your Fashion Style: 17 Secret Everyday Fashion Tips for Moms

Let’s now answer the question: how do you upgrade your style? Here’s my mantra: Change your look like you change your mindset: boldly and without hesitation.

Based on that, here are my 17 secrets that have helped me look like a diva in every phase of my life:

The One-Year Rule

The one-year rule says that if you haven’t worn an item in a year, it likely doesn’t fit your lifestyle anymore, and it’s time to let it go. This principle helps you maintain a practical closet filled only with pieces you love and use.

To only have the most beautiful pieces in your wardrobe, start small. Even removing a few seldom-worn items can free up space while also ensuring whatever you wear is stylish.

Invest in Timeless Basic Pieces

The importance of foundational wardrobe items can never be overlooked because they build up your attire.

My go-tos include a classic blue dress, tailored pants, a versatile jacket, and a few key accessories like a scarf or a necklace as they help create multiple outfits. These basics are stylish and incredibly practical, making your daily dressing a breeze.

The scene reflects a personalized shopping experience in a chic, curated environment.

Dress for Your Body Shape

Not all styles are for every shape, and that’s okay. Early on in my fashion glow-up journey, I discovered that empire waist dresses highlight my best features while forgiving the areas I’m self-conscious about, so they are a constant in my styling.

Whether you’re an hourglass, pear, or apple, knowing what highlights your best features is key. Look for cuts that flatter your shape—think A-line skirts for apple shapes and belted tops for hourglasses.

Fit Matters

If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t flatter. I once bought a gorgeous blazer that was a size too big, thinking a loose fit would work. It didn’t. But tailoring it changed everything.

Clothes should hug your shape or flow just right. If something you love doesn’t fit well, tailor it, and you’ll love how doing it uplifts the look.

Know Your Colors

My closet used to be a sea of black until I realized earth tones made my skin glow. But using a simple online color analysis tool called Color Wise, I revamped my wardrobe with colors that beautify my natural features.

So, start experimenting with colors and watch your presence light up a room. Here are some quick tips to find your color:

  • Fair Skin: Soft pinks, light blues, mint greens, and rich red.
  • Medium Skin: Olive, mustard, orange, ruby red, and taupe.
  • Olive Skin: Beige, mocha, bright orange, and royal blue
  • Dark Skin: Lemon yellow, cherry red, cobalt blue, and emerald green

Make-up Matters

Minimalist makeup has always been my go-to because it hardly goes wrong. For some drama, a swipe of bold lipstick and a stroke of eyeliner can elevate even the simplest outfit.

Remember, when trying to figure out how to improve your fashion style, less is often more. Focus on one feature and make it your standout point.

Upgrade Your Jewelry Sense

Jewelry should complement, not complicate your look. So, when learning how to improve your style, choose simple, classic pieces that can be mixed and matched across outfits. Think of jewelry as the punctuation in your fashion statement—essential but subtle.

Don’t Ignore Hair Style

Your hair is your most permanent accessory, so figure out a style that complements your face shape and lifestyle. It doesn’t matter if it’s a bob, layers, or long waves, a good haircut can frame your face and make you look stylish.

If you’re unsure which haircut to go for, consult with a stylist who can guide you based on your facial features and hair type.

Subtle Over Bold

Early in my style journey, I leaned towards bold patterns that felt exciting, but they often overshadowed me. I’ve since learned the power of subtlety.

If you want that ‘clean girl look,’ pick outfits with understated elegance to let your natural beauty shine through.

In the middle is a woman dressed in a red floral-patterned wrap dress and wedge heels, accessorized with large hoop earrings. On the right is a man in an orange button-down shirt with dark trousers, smiling at the camera. They are standing on a wooden floor with a dark backdrop, and the lighting gives the scene a warm, vibrant feel showing the subtle over bold.

Layer Up

Layer your outfits like you layer your dreams: with depth and passion.

Here’s a hack I love passing on: layering your outfit isn’t just for changing weather. It’s a stylist’s secret weapon.

I am saying to mix textures, lengths, and complementary colors to create visually interesting outfits. You are to start with a basic piece like a tank top and build up by throwing on a kimono. Always keep proportion in mind to maintain a polished look.

Find Your Celebrity Inspiration

If there’s one thing the internet has made immensely accessible, it’s fashion inspiration. I mean, just click on the Instagram reels section, and you’ll find a couple of styling videos in one go. But we don’t want to be confused with all that info.

The best practice is to pick a celebrity or fashion influencer whose styling appeals to you the most and then replicate it smartly. I follow people whose build and complexion mirror my own, so their fashion choices are naturally a potential fit for my wardrobe.

Your Posture Matters

I’m a big fan of the YouTuber, The Wizard Liz, who has played a huge role in my journey of self-development.

In one of her videos, Liz explains how sitting and standing with your shoulders straight and slightly pushed back puts you in control. On the other hand, when you have droopy shoulders and sit with arms tightly crossed, you appear as a ‘closed or unapproachable’ person. So, watch your posture and straighten up—it’s good for your spine too.

Experiment

How do you drop a red hot pen? By dropping it. Similarly, how to improve your fashion style? By changing it.

Shed your fashion fears like an old coat and try new things.  Inspiration is everywhere—from nature to art to iconic fashion figures when you’re unsure how to find your style of clothing.

Keep trying new outfit styles, makeup looks, and hairstyles to actually find out what makes you look the best. And that’s your new fashion style.

Regular Wardrobe Updates

Do you often wrestle with a mountain of clothes you never wear? If yes, why keep something that doesn’t make you smile or fit right?

Your style should evolve as you do, so set a schedule to review your wardrobe every season. It will help discard old pieces and reassess your current lifestyle so you always have what you need and love—nothing more, nothing less.

Her expression is calm and slightly pensive, and behind her are light-colored curtains separating the changing areas. The clothes in her arms include a mix of striped and solid garments, along with a pair of denim shorts on top. The setting appears to be a relaxed regular wardrobe updates.

Embracing Body Changes

Our bodies go through seasons, just like fashion does. Whether it’s due to aging, health changes, or a new chapter in life, your wardrobe should adapt to fit you—not the other way around. Celebrate these changes by finding a style that not only makes you feel good but also flatters your curves.

Quality over Quantity

When trying to improve your fashion style, your shopping mantra should be: buy only what sparks joy.

When eyeing a new piece, I ask myself three questions:

  • Does this fit well?
  • Will it sit well with my styling rotations?
  • Do I feel good when I wear it?

If an item doesn’t check these boxes, back on the shelf it goes. High-quality basics can transform your daily dressing routine. For example, a well-crafted blazer, a sturdy leather bag, and a stylish belt are investments in your wardrobe because they last.

Accept yourself

Fashion is deeply personal, so start with embracing who you are—your age, your shape, your mood. Dressing well means dressing true to yourself.

Mistakes? Sure, you’ll make them. But each one teaches you more about your style. Use fashion as a tool to express and accept yourself. And know that what works for someone else might not work for you.

How to Style Clothes for Your Body Type: Creating Your Style Vision

I decided to take control of my wardrobe one frustrating morning, trying to choose an outfit for a big presentation. That’s when I realized then that my closet didn’t reflect who I was or wanted to be. I started looking for ways to improve my fashion style and found out about the style vision board—and it was a game-changer for me.

You may have great things in your closet but the way you dress up might make you question, how can I make my outfit look good? And that’s what I’ll help you with now.

Here’s how you can also transform your style with intention and clarity:

Image of a fashion collage featuring a mix of contemporary high-fashion items. It includes a beige sleeveless maxi dress with a large black tote bag, a black structured coat with dramatic lapels, a bold zebra-striped long coat, and a sleeveless camel coat with denim sleeves. The accessories include red pointed slingback flats, a woven dark green handbag, yellow aviator sunglasses, and a close-up of a black heel with a snake-skin toe cap. The overall theme highlights modern, eclectic pieces blending minimalism with statement fashion elements representing how can I make my outfit look good.

Create a Style Vision Board

First up, gather images that speak to your desired style. Take inspiration from celebrities or influencers that best represent your skin tone and body shape. Use platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, or fashion magazines to find looks that resonate with you. This board will be a blueprint for your newfound style. It will help visualize what you love and guide your wardrobe choices.

Define Your Style

With your vision board ready, identify themes. Are you attracted to bold colors, sleek silhouettes, or vintage vibes? Knowing this will make your shopping easier and dressing decisions smarter in a way that every outfit reflects your true self.

Now, take a critical look at your closet to see if each piece aligns with the style you’ve defined. If something doesn’t fit your vision, it’s time to part ways. Your wardrobe should have pieces that you absolutely love—things that make you excited to get dressed. It will eventually boost your confidence and reduce outfit stress.

Some Smart Budget-Friendly Shopping Strategies

I’ve always enjoyed shopping, but when I realized I was spending too much just to boost my fashion game, I knew I had to rethink my approach. Now, I’ve got it down to the art of refreshing my style without spending too much.

Here are a few tips to shop smartly so that you can keep your fashion style up and fresh on a budget.

Buy from Lux Consignment Stores: Shopping at luxury consignment stores like TheRealReal and Outnet.com is a savvy move if you like all things classy but worth the money. TheRealReal offers high-quality, pre-loved items at wallet-friendly prices–a savior when you’re in the process of finding your fashion style. Discarding some of them won’t dent your budget as much.

Shop Smartly During Holiday Sales: Holiday sales offer a prime opportunity to upgrade your fashion style without overspending. So plan and list items that would genuinely level up your style—things you’ve been eyeing but seemed just out of budget. Then, ask yourself if you would buy each item even if it wasn’t on sale. This keeps your Holiday season shopping focused and ensures you invest in pieces that contribute to your style, rather than cluttering your closet.

Explore Outlets: Outlets are a great resource for budget-friendly shopping, but it’s easy to get carried away. So visit with a plan. Check the fabirc’s quality and fit carefully to avoid compromising on the essentials for the sake of a lower price.
